Traeger Frequently asked questions
Q: What are the wood pellets made from?
A:
Traeger Pellets are made from 100% all hardwood sawdust. The raw
material is ground, heated and fed through a die at enormous pressure
to form the pellet. No glue or other binding agents are used to form
the pellets. The pellets are a bio-mass, renewable resource product
generating 8500 BTU per pound. The pellets burn very efficiently. A 20
lb bag of pellets leaves behind only teaspoons of ash.
Q: Are the Traeger wood pellets the same as heating pellets?
A:
No. Depending on how they are made, heating pellets may be made from
resinous soft wood and scrap wood containing glues, paints and varnish.
Substituting fuel pellets for food grade pellets is dangerous and
unhealthy. If you use heating pellets in your Traeger grill, the
pellets may leave behind resin and creosote which give your food a very
unpleasant taste. Use of fuel pellets voids your Traeger warranty.
Q: How does a Traeger Grill work?
A:
Wood pellets in the hopper are automatically delivered to the firepot
by an augur. When air is added via a small fan, the pellets burn like a
miniature forge. This heat is indirectly and evenly diffused within the
cooking chamber. Your food doesn’t burn and you can cook anywhere on
the grill surface.
Q: How does the smoker control work?
A:
The smoker control is a solid-state timer. On HIGH, the auger runs all
the time, delivering the maximum amount of fuel to the firepot. This
creates a temperature between 400-425 degrees F. On MEDIUM, the auger
runs for 2 minutes and then stops for 2 minutes. A temperature between
225-300 degrees F. is produced at this setting. On SMOKE, the auger
runs for one minute and is off for 3 minutes generating between 140-180
degrees F.
Q: Do you need a rotisserie for this grill?
A:
No. The grill cooks using indirect heat, cooking food evenly without
the need for a rotisserie. One thing you’ll find is that a Traeger
grill is very forgiving when it comes to cooking. You don’t have to
worry about burning your food.
Q: How much electricity does the grill use?
A:
During the first four minutes while the igniter rod is on, the grill
will draw 300 watts per hour. However, it then drops down to 50 watts
per hour for the duration of your cook session--less than a standard
light bulb!
Q: How long will a bag of pellets last?
A:
On HIGH, the grill uses 2-2.5 pounds of pellets per hour, on MEDIUM
1-1.5 pounds per hour. When the grill is on SMOKE it uses ½-1 pound per
hour.
Q: Where can I get the wood pellets?
A: From dealers and distributors around the country and on the Internet.
Q: What flavor of pellets should I use?
A: Hickory and mesquite are the most popular. But try all of our flavors. Even combine them!
Q: Who do I call if have a question?
A: Please call Traeger’s help line: 800.872.3437.
