|How to Calibrate the Dome Thermometer of your Big Green Egg
Do you need to calibrate your Big Green Egg's Dome Thermometer ? YES!
How often ? I suggest when you first get your cooker and once a year.
How do you do it? Get yourself one 7/16” wrench , box wrench works best .. please avoid adjustable wrenches, vice grips, and pliers please! Go get a real 7/16” wrench and do it right the first time!
Remove the dome thermo by reaching inside the dome and compressing the spring clip and pulling the thermometer out the front of the dome.
Next, get a pot of water going on the stove to a rolling boil. (If you are at sea level, or close , that water is 212 degrees F. ) Put the tip (1” or so) of the thermometer in the water, don’t touch the sides or bottom of the pot. (I use a tongs to hold it.) .. and note the temp ...if it is not 212 , then make a mental note of the “offset” correction needed.
Then using your 7/16 box end wrench adjust the nut on the back while watching the gauge on the front ... to set the thermo to compensate for the error ...
Here’s a view from the “front” of the thermo while I’m adjusting the nut from the back and watching to set the “offset” needed to make the correction. Keep doing this until it reads aprox 212 when put in the water.
Reinstall and be Happy Eggin!
