TIPS, TRICKS, SUPPORT INFO FOR MAVERICK PRODUCTS.
Q. What is the best way to mount the "smoker" probe in the Big Green Egg. A. I didn't find the included metal clip to work too good, so I looked for an alternative. I found the BBQ Guru Probe holder, available as an accessory from us, to work really good, much better than that metal clip. It has a rubber (silicone?) "plunger" that you force between two tynes of the grate and you can position the probe or multiple probes for that matter at any angle or height. It really improved how the Maverick worked.
Q. How long do the batteries in the ET-73 last. A. Maverick reports that the batteries have a very, very long life. They report that many of their products don't even have an on/off switch and just stay on all the time. That being said, I have used mine for over 20 overnight cooks and both the transmitter and the receiver both are working fine.
Q. My unit shows "HHH" on it's readout, what does that mean? A. This is a problem with a probe, most often a burned probe, overheated probe, crimped/crunched probe wire or non-synched receiver/transmitter.
* PROBE USAGE AND CARE TIPS *** VERY IMPORTANT ***
* PROBE WIRE SHOULD NOT TOUCH ANY COOKING SURFACE Like for instance, a grill grate , etc. * WIRE SHOULD NOT BE "CRIMPED" BY THE HEAVY DOME TOP .. PUT SCRUNCHED ALUMINUM FOIL NEXT TO IT TO SLIGHTLY EASE THE TENSION ON THE WIRE BY THE HEAVY GRILL TOP.
* IF POSSIBLE , STICK THROUGH ANY SMALL HOLE IN GRILL'S COVER
* Wetness ! Even though some units, like the ET-73 have waterproofing provisions in their design, they can still get wet enough for them to be damaged temporarily or permanently by water.
In General, HHH could mean a burned spot on the wire or a burned out probe or an overheated probe. NOTE ...sometimes these "come back" it won't work for hours and then it'll come back and work perfectly forever. This was an overheated probe that did not burn out and it is good to use this way
* TEMP LIMIT ON A PROBE IS APROX 500 DEGREES. NOTE . even though your cooker may show only 300 or so on it's thermometer, if there is even a single flame that hits the wire, it'll burn it out immediately. FLAME CANNOT touch a wire even for .
We had a discussion with Maverick Housewares and they made this provision for us. "ANY CUSTOMER THAT BOUGHT A THERMOMETER IN THE LAST 90 DAYS, CAN CALL MAVERICK AT 800-526-0954 AND GET A FREE REPLACEMENT. "
If your unit is more than 90 days old, Maverick will sell you a new probe for $ 12.00 delivered in the USA.
NOTE * On a unit such as the ET-73, the food probe and the smoker probe only differ in size and shape of the actual probe, otherwise they function exactly the same and they can be reversed / substituted etc.
* TO PROPERLY SYNCH YOUR WIRELESS UNIT - 1. Turn on the Receiver (the part that you carry around with you) 2. Wait 30 seconds 3. Turn on the Transmitter (the part that the probe(s) plug into). 4. They should sync up perfectly, if not, repeat process.
